Why Phones Engineer Lens Flare Away — and Cinema Pays Extra For It
Lens flare is something cameras render. It's also something phones engineer away.
The same optical phenomenon (light scattering inside a lens, hitting the sensor at an angle) is treated as a feature on a cinema camera and a defect on a phone.
On a phone, flare gets flagged as an artifact. The ISP does its best to suppress it. Multi-frame stacking, segmentation, tone mapping — all of these tend to wash out the bloom and ghosts you'd see optically. Sometimes you can watch it happen frame to frame in the live preview.
On a cinema lens, that same bloom is the look. Anamorphic streaks. Rainbow ghosts. The atmospheric softening that tells your eye there's a real lens between you and the scene. Directors pay extra for that! LOL
Same input, two completely opposite outputs: one pipeline reads it as noise to clean up, and the other reads it as the thing the audience came for.
What's interesting is that this is a values choice dressed up as a technical one. There's no neutral ground really. You either preserve the imperfection or you don't, and somebody decided that for you long before you pressed the shutter.
Flare carries time of day, direction, atmosphere. When the phone scrubs it, the image gets cleaner and emptier at the same time.
Flare also reveals the camera. The lens becomes a physical thing, not an invisible window — a fourth-wall break, in a way. And that can be a good thing. You trust an image more when it admits it's made.
